Your Purpose Is To Live A Life That Matters September 6, 2017 – Posted in: Everyday Living
At the end of life, what really matters is not what we bought but what we built; not what we got but what we shared; not competence but our character; and not our success but our significance. Live a life that matters. — Unknown
For the past few weeks I’ve been adulting. I’ve been doing grown up things that I never quite fantasized about growing up; renewing rents, firing incompetent staff, hiring better ones, running a fashion business I still don’t know much about from thousands of miles away from it, branding just to rebrand, failing in some areas of business, learning from it, recouping from loss, enjoying some gains, planning and strategizing for more gains. It’s been like a windmill that never quite stops. Through all of this, I’ve thought about you; every one that takes the time to read the words I come up with. I’ve thought about exciting things I’ve wanted to share with you to encourage you to do more in the journey of life and adulthood. I’ve wondered if you’re doing all that you can to create the life you envision for yourself. So right now I’m doing one of my favorite things to ever do, I’m sitting in a cafe, listening to coldplay and writing to you.
I met a young lady yesterday that interviewed me for her platform called Woman Like The Wind, she asked me some questions that forced me to think deeply and they truly reminded me of my ‘why’; the reasons I do anything at all, my purpose. So I’m curious as to what your ‘why’ is. Why do you do the things that you currently do in life?
Your purpose is to live a life that truly matters. It’s very easy to get in to the routine of things, morning after morning, Lagos traffic after another Lagos traffic, one weekend that slides into another busy week as the year rounds up and we roll with the motion, but what are you doing all that for? How much control do you have over your life and what happens to you? Are you accepting things as ‘that’s just how it works’ or are you actively creating the life you desire? I have the unpopular opinion that we are solely responsible for the class of life we live; not the corrupt politicians or the dwindling economy, not the current balance nearing the negatives in our bank accounts or the big companies that only hire relatives of the men they golf with forgetting the thousands of graduates that are better qualified for the role. Unfortunate things happen and that’t the way the cookie crumbles but how you react to these things is what truly matters and what you create regardless of the bleak reality is what will differentiate you from the masses. Anyone can stop me on the road and steal my phones, clear my account out but no one can ever steal my mind and that is my power. How well are you using your mind?
I’ve come to the realization that not everyone knows their purpose on earth and not many people are curious to even find out. It’s ok to not have all the answers but I do not understand not trying at all. It’s important to try to find out why you are here and what purpose you’re here to fulfil. There is way more to life than barely getting by and watching people on tv making a difference in the world we live in. You are also capable of doing more, of being more, of contributing to the universe.
When was the last time you challenged yourself to create? To try something new, to pursue an old dream, to build. You are much more valuable than you realize. Your strength lies in the power of your mind, how well you’re able to use it and how resilient you are in the pursuit of building your imaginations in real life even when the odds are not in your favour. Don’t just go through the motion of life, create your own motion picture; be the writer, the producer and the director in the making of your life story. You have the power and I challenge you to use it.
Happy living, Happy building.
