Elevator Pitch | How Well Can You Sell Yourself? July 6, 2017 – Posted in: Everyday Living

What is your elevator pitch? Can you clearly and precisely articulate what you want out of your life?

We all have dreams and everyone is working towards achieving something. Sometimes we feel like our work will advance if only we had someone to finance it or give us an opportunity; if you have 2 minutes with your ‘person’, can you clearly state what you want?

I’ve always considered myself to be a free spirit and as such i believed in  going with the flow, accepting what comes & stays, letting go of what doesn’t. In theory, it’s a simple life. But with years and experiences I’ve come to realise that while i might be a free spirit, life is not and for as long as I exist in the universe, I have to be willing to un-learn and re-learn in order to grow.

Years ago I had a job interview for a business development role. After building a rapport with the interviewer and what felt like a successful interview, we got into a conversation and he casually asked what I wanted out of life. I replied saying ‘Oh I love traveling, I model occasionally but fashion is my true passion and now I’m trying out being a fitness instructor’. Here I was for one role, listing out 3 diverse roles of what i would rather be doing. In retrospect, I can see how confused I came across. Safe to say I did not get the job. Don’t be that person that can not clearly state what it is they want out of life. If you don’t know that then what are you chasing exactly?

I’ve spent too much time chasing the wind and I know now that you can not achieve something if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and a precise plan for how to achieve it. It’s not enough to just know that you want success. What path are you taking that’s going to lead you to said success? In the words of Albert Einstein, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough”. If you don’t understand it well enough then you have it all wrong. The first step to being relevant in anything is to learn it, understand it and practise to master it.

Now, if asked what I want out of life now, I would say that I want to inspire people to live their full lives through my words which is why i write on my blog and I want to create and sell quality sustainable fashionable clothing at an affordable price which is why i have my fashion store

Keep in mind that you will never get a second chance to make a first impression. Prospects don’t care who you are or what you do, they care about what you/your services can do for them and more often than not they don’t have the time or the patience to listen to an epistle.

In summary, once you know what you want out of life, it’s important to learn how to ‘sell’ it as effectively as possible. The one minute elevator pitch identifies a problem and provides a sustainable solution for it. What is your elevator pitch?
