CAN YOUR TALENT CHANGE THE WORLD? July 4, 2017 – Posted in: Everyday Living

“I believe that God has put gifts and talents and ability on the inside of every one of us. When you develop that and you believe in yourself and you believe that you’re a person of influence and a person of purpose, I believe you can rise up out of any situation.” – Joel Osteen

When you take a long hard look at the featured image attached to this story what do you see? The colours blue, yellow green? A family unit? Nature? The women next to each other? The men at a distance? A valley or perhaps a stream?

I see $210,000,000 because that’s what this painting sold for. The works of someone’s hands and mind was valued in millions of dollars and someone somewhere out there found it worth it to pay almost a quarter billion dollars for it. If this isn’t awesome then i’m not sure what else is.

It’s a 1982 oil painting by French post-Impressionist Paul Gauguin titled “When Will You Marry”. Because I can’t get over this work of art, i’ll post it again below

Lately it’s almost as though the universe has been trying to speak to me. I’ve been stumbling upon the same message in so many differing words – ‘Use your talent’. I’ve come to understand and appreciate the reality that one can make money from what one is good at or willing to learn to master. We live in a generation where every young person wants to be a creator without getting the traditional work experience to understand the work place etiquette. Everyone has a right to decide to live the lives they want for themselves but take a minute to consider this; what will make you stand out from the next hundred people with your dream, vision and sometimes the capital to bring it to life? What will make your idea valued at a million dollars tomorrow? Why you?

In the words of a good friend of mine ‘It’s not about you’. Your talent may be yours to own but understand that ‘packaging’ your talent is not about you. According to Mr Sunesis, “It is about your purpose and your relevance to this world. Your ideas, vision and the things you do should be for the benefit of others; to advance humanity and not self” Imagine if Steve Jobs worked on apple so he could use it to communicate with his parents? If Oprah founded OWN to provide entertainment for her immediate family. If Thomas Edison had worked on the light bulb for his home only to have better vision at night. If Mark Zuckerberg kept Facebook only within the Zuckergerg family.

It’s time to stop thinking small and to allow yourself believe you can create something sustainable that can influence generations to come. Thomas Edison said “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” Now you have the vision, GET TO WORK.

I’ll end with one of my favourite Warren Buffet quotes “Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago”.  What will you do today that will still be impactful tomorrow? Ponder on this and then start creating. The world is for our taking and I believe in the power of you and I to impact the world and be life time relevant because of the ‘works of our hands’
