BOOKS OF THE WEEK!!! February 12, 2016 – Posted in: Everyday Living

I gave up TV/Movies/TV Series for the next 4 weeks because i’m trying to focus more on the things that lead to growth in my personal life so I promised myself i would read more books. It’s not enough to give up one vice, you must replace it with something that has a positive effect.

I’m trying to read 2 books a week so if anyone has any recommendations please feel free to drop in the comments.

This week i’ve read 2 books.

1. Everything Good Will Come by Sefi Atta – This book is about the coming to age of a yoruba girl in Lagos amidst the political changes Nigeria went through in the early 1970’s; it depicts the struggles that open minded Nigerian women face in an utterly conservative society. I really liked this book, i found myself being friendly with the main character Enitan Taiwo; i understood her plight and her life experiences, i connected to her on so many levels. I’m very impressed that it was the first book of the writer.

2. Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami – This is another coming to age book set in Tokyo in the late 1960’s. It follows the life and experiences of Toru Watanabe. The process of dealing with loss, finding sexuality, finding love in a hopeless place, unrequited love, finding one’s self, losing one’s self, dealing with even more loss and surviving through it all. To me it showed just how much one incident can alter one’s entire life order. It left me feeling empty at the end to be honest but it was a very enlightening read.
Artists i’ve listened to this week – Nina Simone, India Arie, Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse, Fela Kuti and Frank Sinatra. They’ve all been on repeat one artist after the other.

Knowledge wise it has been a decent and insightful week for me. I’m learning and i’m growing. I urge you to do the same, break your routine, replace one bad habit for a good habit, read more, listen to more conscious music, get out and take a stroll, appreciate nature. Do something that is not in your usual life pattern.
